HURRICANE IAN

October 2022 Newsletter

A bit more than a week ago, on Wednesday September 28th, Southwest Florida was hit with Hurricane Ian, a category 4 storm which brought devastating damage to multiple Southwest Florida communities from Marco Island (south of Naples) to Sarasota (117 miles north of Naples). With peak winds up to 155mph near the eye of the storm and widespread historic storm surge, the coastline and everything in its way was wiped out. Prior to Wednesday, the storm was tracking for the Tampa area, but made a late and unexpected turn towards Fort Myers and then slowed down to a crawl as it chewed into SWFL. The barrier islands and coastal communities located north of Naples were hardest hit as they were in the direct path of the eye of the storm; Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel Island, Captiva, Matlacha, Pine Island, Cape Coral and Fort Myers were just devastated along the coastlines. Marco Island, Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero also experienced historic flooding for those properties located closest to the waterways (the Gulf, the Naples Bay and the many rivers, creeks, and waterways).

Southwest Florida has had so much support from all over the country, thanks to all the first responders, volunteers and emergency personnel including line workers from 30+ states coming in to help us restore power – we are so grateful. It’s been heartening to see the community pulling together and helping to support each other in the efforts to clean-up and restore essential services such as water, power, internet and cell service. We have come a long way the last 10 days but still have a way to go, the folks that were flooded out of their homes or lost their homes entirely are going to need ongoing support. I’m confident that there will be something positive that comes out of this experience for our community. We will clean-up, rebuild and we will come back better than ever.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or need help – happy to check on properties and help troubleshoot any issues with damage from the storm that you or any friends/family might have experienced.
