BLUE ZONES PROJECT

Naples – A Blue Zones Project

Blue Zones Project Logo

A Blue Zone, a term introduced first by author and National Geographic fellow Dan Buettner, is described as an area where there are a large number of people that live a longer than average life span. In 2015, the NCH Healthcare System based in Naples, inaugurated Naples as a “Blue Zones Project” which further incentivized area businesses and catapulted our area to a very popular place to live. Naples was prime for this designation, as residents already exhibited most of the behaviors and lifestyle characteristics. It was also done to encourage healthy behaviors in everyday life throughout the broader community. It has been so successful that Naples has been included in Kiplinger’s top places to retire for great health, among other accolades such as:

  • The Best Place in America to Live Your Longest Life (Money)
  • Healthiest, Happiest, Most Relaxed City in the United States (Gallup-Sharecare)
  • Top 10 Places Where Americans Live the Longest (realtor.com)
  • Naples ranks as the #1 best beach town to live in 2020, 2019 (WalletHub)
  • Naples, FL Ranked in Top 5 Places to Retire and Top 15 Places to Live (U.S. News & World Report)
  • And many more found on our Resource Page

It is true that the growth of this city into a Blue Zone has been fueled by residents who are brought here by the beaches, the subtropical weather, golfing and boating and the lush landscape, but one does not have to wait to retire to start living here; Collier County has over 48,000 in the public school system alone! In a recent Gallup-Healthways Well-Being index, the Naples-Marco Island area was given first place! This was done by gauging the views of residents on financial security, health, community, and sense of purpose.

A Blue Zone lifestyle is an active one, and it is easy to accomplish in many of Naples neighborhoods; Aqualane Shores, Old Naples and Coquina Sands to name a few – where everything you need is within walking or biking distance. Amenities include healthy restaurants, grocery stores focused on fresh and local, progressive hospitals, wellness centers and holistic practitioners, golf courses etc. Here is a list of areas and reasons which make Naples a happy and healthy place to live.

Outdoor Activities

The residents of Naples have numerous options to choose from when deciding on things to do. Naples boasts more than 90 golf courses, each greener and vaster than the other. Other popular active lifestyle activities include swimming, studio and beach yoga, kayaking or paddle boarding our plentiful waterways including the calm Gulf of Mexico, biking along Gulf Shore Blvd from North Naples to South Naples (a very scenic route which is 14.5 milesl) or within many of our popular neighborhoods, hiking the areas many trails or a fast paced stroll or run on the beach or in your neighborhood! Naples Florida also has some of the most varied recreational parks in Florida where people of all ages come to picnic, walk, bike or sightsee. It is impossible to experience boredom in Naples when residents and tourists alike have so much to enjoy.

Naples has a number of healthy, but delicious eateries spread across town. This means that you do not have to worry about eating out as much! A Blue Zones Project features a lifestyle consisting of healthy and complete meals, and that is exactly what the menu entails at most restaurants in Naples. Organically Twisted, True Food Kitchen, Food and Thought, Seed to Table, Fit and Fuel Café, The Bowl, Green Apron Cafe, Mediterrano, The Local, Soul Bowls, Delicious Raw, Cafe Nutrients, Vegan Kitchen, Juicelation are just a few of the healthy eating spots my family rotates regularly.

Fresh Food Markets

If you look forward to picking your own fresh groceries, and opting for the healthiest local ingredients for home cooked meals, then Naples and its wide range of fresh food markets are the place for you! Not too far from the residential areas, so you are free to walk or bike there, are markets like Oakes Farm Market, Food & Thought, Seed to Table, Wynn’s Market, Fresh Market, Sprouts Farmers Market and the many weekly Farmers Markets spread throughout Naples. Stores like Food & Thought and Seed to Table also offer dining options as well, both of which my family loves.

Sunniest Place on Earth

Naples is among the sunniest places on Earth and proudly boasts its other names, the Sunshine State and Paradise Coast, because it experiences more than 300 days of sunshine every year! It is common knowledge that sunshine stimulates the human brain’s production of Serotonin, making our mood reach new highs. Plus with most Americans lacking the very crucial Vitamin D, daily sunshine exposure keeps your levels higher than average, which is vital to healthy living. So it is no surprise that Naples is home to some of the happiest people in the world.
